The cases are described briefly in the current report. Fuller versions of the case studies are available in mimeograph from the Africa Regional ECD Initiative, and they are scheduled to be incorporated into the World Bank's CD rom on ECD. The current report also refers to additional ECD efforts for which information was collected but not sufficient to construct full case studies. The criteria for selection of the eleven cases were therefore: availability of information and demonstrated survival of the effort beyond the inception stage, and its contribution to extending the range of ECD possibilities that could be illustrated for the region.

Kushanda provides training and follow-up support to establish the center (including stationery materials), nutrition supplements and adult nonformal education. In Table 3 (below) the variety of ECD objectives are combined in a single matrix. Programs which address school readiness and those which aim to impact health and nutrition indicators have direct benefit to the children involved. A further two categories of objectives aim to impact children indirectly through their parents and through ECD workers of various kinds (preschool teachers, parent educators, home visitors, day care providers, ECD trainers) by enhancing knowledge and skills in caring for children.
