This section guides public and school library professionals in the selection of materials by providing carefully researched information on common problems, such as books with stereotypical or inaccurate information. Using the checklist can promote the selection of materials that are meaningful, realistic, and accurately representative of American Indian culture.

Dialogue participants agreed that schools must begin to integrate Indian culture into the Basic Academic Competencies as well as subject-matter areas (American Indian Science & Engineering Society 1989, 2). Page 6 This report represents a consensus achieved at meetings of 150 Indian leaders, school administrators, teachers, parents, and students from eighty-seven tribes, with every major geographic region in the nation represented. Despite the diversity and complexity of cultures and tribal affiliations, there are eight values basic to the social structure of most American Indian tribes. School and public library professionals should understand this basic value system to effectively select materials dealing with the American Indian because American Indian students in public, private, and government schools are the major consumers of these materials (Metoyer 1978, 16).
